Remembering 9/11
The attacks of September 11th, 2001 were intended to break the American spirit. Instead, we emerged stronger and more unified. We felt a renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic, and religious freedom, the rule of law, and respect for human life.
In 2001 – 2002 patriotism caught fire in the USA in print ads, signs, banners, and online media. Businesses wanted to show their support for America and US flags sold at record numbers.
Sadly, today we are becoming more of a divided nation. This week as we embrace another 9/11 tribute, let’s reflect on what it means to be an AMERICAN.
It was my pleasure to design this patriotic ad for Hudson Printing and Graphic Design. It was printed in the 2002 issue of UL Magazine. Little did I know, people would cut this ad out of the magazine, frame it, and display it. Randy Peters of Peters Chevrolet had this framed and hanging in their showroom for years. I saw others do the same. The artwork was even reformated for a desk calendar and large-format printed.
The photo-montage was created in Adobe Photoshop. The stock photography for graphic design work was purchased from AdobeStock.com. UL Magazine (Uniquely Longview) is printed and published by Hudson Publishing.
A final thought from Deepak Chopra “For me and my family personally, September 11 was a reminder that life is fleeting, impermanent, and uncertain. Therefore, we must make use of every moment and nurture it with affection, tenderness, beauty, creativity, and laughter.”
Patriotism is what binds us together but is often in short supply. We’re a divided nation that too often puts political party over country. Some radio talk shows and cable news foster this atmosphere and stoke the partisanship. We’re stronger together and can accomplish much more if we’re willing to work together to build an inclusive society that is responsive to all members, and not just the majority race and the rich.
